Listen to Your Parents… Breakfast IS the Most Important Meal of the Day!

April 3, 2012

I have heard that saying for most of my life. Until I began studying nutrition, I didn’t realize that what my parents were always saying was actually true! I mean my dad has told me some outrageous stories before, so how was I supposed to know he was telling the truth?

Breakfast IS the most important meal of the day. It determines how the rest of your day is going to turn out and how you are going to feel the entire day! Ideally, you should be consuming a meal within 2 hours of waking up to ensure your metabolism is working hard! Because it’s your body’s first consumption of food since dinner the night before (hopefully it’s not your middle of the night binge on girl scout cookies!), you need to make sure it is well balanced. By well balanced, I mean, you should be consuming at least 3 out of the 5 food groups. Choose from dairy, protein, carbohydrates, fruits or vegetables.

Most people think of breakfast as cereal, oatmeal, bagel, muffin, etc. But in fact, you can have any meal you would like for breakfast. If you want toast with a slice of cheese and 3 slices of turkey breast, go for it! It is whatever you like and whatever gives you the fuel to get through your morning. Want something quick, grab a Greek yogurt, some fruit and your favorite cereal to mix together to make your own yogurt parfait or an English muffin with natural peanut butter and a sliced pear on top!

Having breakfast will kick start your metabolism and give you the energy you need to start your day. Who knows, you might be able to even decrease that coffee consumption once you have a well-balanced meal in the morning! Sorry, jumping the gun a bit? Ok, start small- have breakfast and see how your energy level is and then we can talk about decreasing your caffeine intake ☺
