Ch-Ch-Ch-Chia.. Seeds That Is!
July 9, 2012We all remember the chia pets that were big in the 80’s where they had anything from animal chia pets to sports stars faces. I mean who would not want Michael Jordan’s face as a chai pet… I think I had three at home. But now, the chia seeds are causing a media buzz!
Chia is a flowering plant that actually comes from the mint family. The whole seeds are now used for nutritious drinks and as a food source however the seeds are also sometimes ground. The seeds are rich in omega- 3 fatty acids, which can help prevent inflammation as well as heart disease. They even have more omega- 3 fatty acids than flax seeds!
Chia seeds are also rich in antioxidants and fiber! They also contain vitamins and minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, manganese, cooper, iron, molybdenum, niacin and zinc.
So, with all these benefits, what do these chia seeds taste like? Well, they have a rather nut-like flavor to them! So, you can add them into your normal eating regimen just like you would flax seeds. Add them to your cereal, in yogurt or even on top of a salad or smoothie. You can even grind them up and place them in your next batch of baked goods!
