Girrrlll ~ It’s Time for a Health Check!
May 3, 2021Girlfriends are priceless. We are there for breakups, makeups, happy hours, brunches, a good laugh and a good cry. The moments are cherished. The memories last a lifetime. Perhaps I am a little partial, considering I am an exercise physiologist, but I feel the greatest gift you can give someone you love is the gift of health and well-being. May 9-15, 2021 is National Women’s Health Week. Share the gift of health with girlfriends by dedicating this week to making efforts to improve your health. Here are some simple points to keep in mind.
Make a Long-Overdue Doctor’s Appointment
You wouldn’t miss making a hair appointment when you need it or a schedule a mani/pedi when your polish is starting to chip. When was your last gyne visit, eye exam, dental checkup, or even full physical? Have you visited the dermatologist in the last 12 months? Check your calendar and call your doctors. It’s time to get appointments in the books!
Check your Blood Pressure
May is also High Blood Pressure Education Month. High blood pressure, or hypertension, is referred to as the silent killer because it is an indicator of multiple health problems such as heart disease, diabetes, and kidney problems without any symptoms. Medical research has shown the birth control pills increases blood pressure in some women. As a woman grows older, her chance of having high blood pressure becomes greater than a man’s. You may have had normal blood pressure most of your life, but after menopause your chances of developing hypertension increase considerably. Know Your Numbers!
Get FIT and Fabulous
Exercise helps us maintain a healthy weight, as we know, but it also strengthens our bones, preventing osteoporosis. It helps regulate our hormones, which we all know comes in handy, alleviating feelings of depression, stress, and anxiety. It reduces the risk of developing heart disease, colon cancer, diabetes, and hypertension. So grab your girlfriends and get moving!
