Does Exercise Really Boost Your Energy Levels? If so, Why?

December 19, 2022

Have you felt chronically tired before that you went to the doctor to find answers? Did your doctor suggest to exercise more? You might have wondered how exercise will raise your energy levels and not actually make you feel more tired.

It might sound strange, but it’s true that moving more can help give you more energy, through several mechanisms.

To begin with, cellular-level changes occur inside your body when you exercise. Millions of micro level systems are happening simultaneously when the body exerts energy. Actually, exertion stimulates your body to produce more mitochondria inside your muscle cells. You might have heard this before, but Mitochondria are known as the powerhouses of cells. It is true because they create fuel out of glucose from the food you eat and oxygen from the air you breathe. Thus, having more of these special cells does increase the body’s energy supply.

Moreover, exercising also boosts oxygen circulation inside your body. Oxygen circulation is increased because muscles, in a way, act as a pump. Muscles contract and release during exercise, and when they are working, this increase in oxygen not only supports the mitochondria’s energy production, it allows your body to function better and to use its energy more efficiently. Plus, your body gets a boost from an exercise-induced increase in endorphins. Endorphins are our body’s natural hormones that get released when we are doing something that requires a burst of energy. Endorphins help us to perform, and they make us move. And when we move, we feel feel more energized.

Lastly, we feel more energized, mentally, and ready to tackle the day/week after a good workout because endorphins have boosted our physical energy level. In addition to helping your body create and use energy, regular exercise promotes better nighttime sleep. Deep sleep is crucial to your overall health and to feeling well rested and energetic when you wake up in the morning.

I believe in the practice of preventative health. The only way to combat chronic diseases is through preventative action such as exercise and diet. My health and wellness career started within myself. After being an active person in high school through sports, my fitness dropped entering college. I gained unhealthy habits that lead to weight gain. To prevent any complications, I made some time to be active again by picking up weight lifting. Through that, I found myself wanting to help others before it was too late for them. As I gained my masters degree, I interned at the Cardiac Rehabilitation department at Advocate Lutheran General. I saw firsthand what cardiovascular disease can do, and what the action plan is to help those people return back to their daily routine. The time to make change is now, but it doesn’t need to be done alone. The science behind exercise is a powerful tool that is often overlooked. I want to motivate and increase self-efficacy to help others achieve their goals.
