Have a Nutritious Start to your Summer Workout!
June 5, 2014Start Your Work Out the Right Way
Summer is finally here and I think we’re all more than happy to see the cold weather gone (the Illinois winter that lasted about 3 months too long!) With all the activities going on, a ton of you are kick starting your workout routine and heading outside. Making sure to eat healthy and stay hydrated are key to having a great workout. Here’s some tips to help you outside:
1) Number one: Stay hydrated!!!
With the heat and weather conditions, many people exercising outdoors forget to stay hydrated. It’s very important to keep hydrated both before, during, and after your workout to maintain your body’s natural state, and keep your electrolytes balanced. Try a sports drink or a post workout fruit smoothie to get nutrients back in the body.
2) Getting Ready for that workout
For those of you heading out early for a workout (especially joining us for our Beach Body Boot Camp at 6 AM!) it’s always important to eat something even if you aren’t feeling hungry. Some light ideas include a fruit smoothie made with almond milk, whole wheat toast with peanut butter and banana, or 1 cup non-fat vanilla Greek yogurt and ½ cup berries. Generally 10-20 grams of protein are fine before a workout so these are some great light ideas to use that aren’t going to fill you up!
3) Fruit’s back in season
With summer starting, this also means all of our favorites fruits are back in season! Look in your local market or grocery store for apricots, blackberries, blueberries, cherries, Asian pears, strawberries, peaches, watermelon, and honeydew melons. All are great to include for healthy snacks, oatmeal toppings, in a fruit salad, or to include with yogurt and granola as a breakfast option.
Hopefully this sunny weather is here to stay for a while, and we can all get out and enjoy our time spent outdoors! Whatever you’re doing for exercise, make sure to keep with it and keep moving!
