Four Successful Ways to Start a Workout Lifestyle

January 2, 2023

Starting to work out is a lot like helping someone move… it sounds good at the time. You organize it and get the needed gear, but the day of, it can be a complete disaster. The following tips should be seen as ways to properly get your newly sought fitness routine into action!

Expecting Perfection CAN Lead to Destruction

One of my early goals every week was to hit the gym three days a week. That is all. It doesn’t matter what combination of days. However, I know we can set ourselves up for failure if we say, “I’m going to the gym for an hour, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. 7:00 AM. No excuses.”

You have to give yourself leeway to make mistakes and have the plan to make up for them. If you miss your morning workout, you are making it up in the evening, or move it to Saturday. Don’t have room for 30 minutes of cardio? Do 15 minutes.

The rookie mistake is scrapping the whole plan because one thing goes wrong. Did you only hit the gym twice? Sweet. It’s keeping the habit that’s the key. Sure, the goal I to make improvements, but start with making small successes.

Prepare the Day Before

I’ll keep this simple. Put your gym clothes in a certain place in your room ready to go. I have a couple of pair of shorts and some shirts and socks ready to go. I don’t have to search for them. If I am searching for gym clothes, piles and piles of excuses stack up to not go the gym. Put your water in the refrigerator ready to go. If you need to go to work after, set aside those clothes as well. Spend the extra time the day before, so the day off goes smoothly!

Tell Your Support Circle

When my friends or family ask what I did today I say, “Well, I started the day working out.” I find talking about it integrates it into your life (and my friends have even joined!). Remember when you met (or thought you met) “the one” – you told everyone! Even if you say, “I went to the gym” you will start having it be your lifestyle.

Hit the Reset Button

If you miss a couple of weeks working out, you can be discouraged and just give up altogether. Don’t! Just as if your computer is locked up, you just flip a switch and start again.

I believe in the practice of preventative health. The only way to combat chronic diseases is through preventative action such as exercise and diet. My health and wellness career started within myself. After being an active person in high school through sports, my fitness dropped entering college. I gained unhealthy habits that lead to weight gain. To prevent any complications, I made some time to be active again by picking up weight lifting. Through that, I found myself wanting to help others before it was too late for them. As I gained my masters degree, I interned at the Cardiac Rehabilitation department at Advocate Lutheran General. I saw firsthand what cardiovascular disease can do, and what the action plan is to help those people return back to their daily routine. The time to make change is now, but it doesn’t need to be done alone. The science behind exercise is a powerful tool that is often overlooked. I want to motivate and increase self-efficacy to help others achieve their goals.
