5 Things I Wish I Knew Before Playing My First Pickleball Game

April 20, 2026

Pickleball has a reputation for being easy to pick up — and honestly, that’s part of what makes it so addictive. You can rally within your first few minutes on the court. But there’s a difference between playing pickleball and playing it well, and a few early lessons can save you a lot of frustration down the road.

Here’s what I wish someone had told me before I picked up a paddle for the first time.

1. The Kitchen Is Your Best Friend

That seven-foot zone on either side of the net — the non-volley zone, or “the kitchen” — looks like a trap. New players avoid it. Smart players live there. Getting to the kitchen line and holding it is the foundation of solid pickleball strategy. The closer you are to the net, the more control you have. Don’t be afraid of it.

2. Soft Hands Win More Points Than Power

Every new player wants to smash the ball. It feels great. It almost never works. Pickleball rewards touch, patience, and placement far more than raw power. Learning to dink — a soft, controlled shot that lands in the kitchen — early on will make you a genuinely dangerous player faster than any power game will.

3. The Ball Bounces Weird (And That’s the Point)

Pickleballs are plastic and full of holes, which means they behave nothing like a tennis ball. They bounce lower, move slower, and respond differently to spin. Give yourself grace in the first few sessions — your eyes and hands are recalibrating. It clicks faster than you’d expect.

4. Communication Is a Skill Too

If you’re playing doubles — which is most pickleball — talking to your partner is half the game. Calling “mine,” “yours,” or “bounce it” in real time prevents more lost points than any single shot will. The best pickleball partners aren’t always the most athletic. They’re the most communicative.

5. You’re Going to Get Hooked — Plan Accordingly

This one isn’t a warning so much as a heads up. Pickleball has a way of going from “I’ll try it once” to “I’ve bought three paddles and blocked off my Saturday mornings” faster than you’d think. Clear the schedule now. You’ll thank yourself later.
