Ashtanga yoga, a dynamic and structured style of yoga, has gained a reputation for being both transformational and demanding. Rooted in ancient traditions and popularized by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in the 20th century, Ashtanga is a practice that integrates breath, movement, and meditation into a powerful sequence of postures. However, many people hold the misconception that Ashtanga yoga is only for the super-fit or experienced yogis. This belief could not be further from the truth. Ashtanga is a practice that is accessible to everyone, regardless of age, flexibility, or fitness level.

 

 

 

Ashtanga yoga is based on a set series of postures, typically practiced in a specific sequence. The practice is divided into six series, starting with the Primary Series (Yoga Chikitsa ), which is designed to detoxify and align the body. Each series builds upon the previous one, introducing more challenging postures as the practitioner progresses. One of the unique aspects of Ashtanga yoga is the use of a specific breathing technique called Ujjayi breath, combined with the engagement of internal energy locks (bandhas) and a focused gaze (drishti). This combination helps to create a moving meditation, where the mind becomes quiet and the practitioner can connect deeply with their body and breath.

This myth has discouraged many people from trying Ashtanga, fearing that they won’t be able to keep up with the challenging sequences. In reality, Ashtanga yoga is for everyone. The practice is highly adaptable, with modifications available for every posture. Beginners are encouraged to start slowly, focusing on the foundational aspects of the practice, such as breath and alignment. Teachers are trained to guide students at their own pace, ensuring that everyone can practice safely and effectively, regardless of their starting point.  

 

 

 

Moreover, Ashtanga’s structured nature provides a clear path for progress. Beginners can start with the Primary Series or even the ½ Primary, gradually building strength, flexibility, and confidence. As they become more comfortable with the practice, they can explore the more advanced series, if and when they are ready.
